Decolonizing Gender & Sexuality, One Podcast at a Time

Apologies, dear readers, for my absence for the past few weeks. As you’ve probably noticed, 2021 is off to a wild start. I’ve been working hard to absorb, process, and move forward over the past two weeks. On top of all that, I’ve switched the hosting of this big ol’ dinosaur of a website to a different company. But now I’m back, and wow do I have some news for you! I’m doing a whole new thing—a podcast!

An hourglass with purple sand and ferns growing out of it is overlaid with a ribbon that says "HourGasm."

Introducing HourGasm

I’ve started a podcast called HourGasm! Along with my co-host—the incomparable scholar, activist, filmmaker, comedian, and all-around superwoman Lenny Peppers—we are decolonizing gender and sexuality, one episode at a time.

I’ve been wanting to produce work on the knotty problem of decolonizing sexuality for years now, and HourGasm is how I’m doing it! Through discussing a broad range of topics, we are peeling back the layers of lived experience, research, and social mores. Underneath them, we’re revealing the structures that have enforced “the rules” on our lives. And, just a hint—most of those rules are sexist, racist, and the direct result of colonization.

So Lenny and I are talking about about everything, picking it apart, and taking away just a little tiny bit of oppressive systems’ power with every podcast. And laughing a lot while we’re at it. Also interviewing some amazing folks along the way, too. (Like the voice of your generation, Charley Macorn, who was on our comics episode! And we’ve got lots more guests coming in Season 21)

Right now, we’re in the process of recording our second season. All while working on a website, launching our social media, and releasing our first season. It’s been a whirlwind, but it’s also been amazing.

So far, we’ve released six or seven (I don’t remember when the seventh one drops, okay?) episodes. We’ve discussed topics ranging from political sex scandals to the history of LGBTQ+ representation in comic books to the history of marriage and beyond. And there are so many more waiting in the wings!

Listen to the Podcast

As I said, we don’t have a website up and running yet. (But it’s under construction!) In the meantime, you can listen to the podcast on every major podcatcher, including:

We’re also up and running on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Give us a follow, give us a listen, and let us know what you think! Our second season isn’t entirely scheduled yet, so if you’ve got a topic you want to hear us cover, let us know!
