Ethical porn is a hot topic of conversation, both here and around the world. So I’ve spent the last week talking about it a lot.
Ethical Porn Down Under
I wrote an article for MEL Magazine about the truly fascinating porn scene in Australia! To whit: porn is heavily restricted there, so pornographers are pretty much outlaws. But these outlaws are really dedicated to making porn ethically! I spoke with some lovely folks like Michelle Flynn, Kim Cums, Madison Missina, Morgana Muses, and the Eros foundation to get to the bottom of this phenomenon!
A nibble:
In large part because of these laws, escorting and brothels are larger industries in most of Australia than porn. In fact, some prominent porn stars and producers got started doing other types of sex work before stepping in front of the camera. “By the time I shot my first-ever porn scene, I’d already been a prostitute (my preferred job title) for 12 years, and a sex worker peer counsellor and low-key advocate for six years,” says Madison Missina, perhaps Australia’s biggest porn star.

Ethical Porn Panel at Book Soup
Oh, also, on Friday evening, I was part of a panel discussion about ethics in porn to promote my book! Kayden Kross, April Flores, Mike Stabile and I sat down (and stood around) at Book Soup on the Sunset Strip to talk about the issue from many angles—production, marketing, journalism, consumption…You name it! It was a really fantastic conversation that I learned a lot from, and I hope everyone in attendance did, too. And now YOU can, as well, because my lovely partner, Jayel Draco, recorded it! You can watch the video (in snippets) on my Facebook timeline. Enjoy! (And get a signed copy of the book from Book Soup!)
